Clarence Darden, the NC's Chief Mechanical Engineer designed both
engines in Nashville and actually ended up with a patent or two
for his design of a cast steel bed frame integral with cylinders,
steam chests and various other engine parts cast into the one piece.
All 25 engines -- five J2's, Yellow Jackets #565-569, and twenty
J3's, Stripes #570-590, --were built in Schenectady, NY by ALCO
While J2's and J3's were exclusively built and used by NC&St.L,
their design features were later incorporated in steam engines built
for every railroad in the U.S.
