Tunnel Hill, Georgia is an important site in the history of the NC& St. L. It was here that the NC&St.L, during its lease of the W & A. railroad, built a second tunnel through the Cheetogeeta Mountain, abandoning the 1850 tunnel, famed for its part in the Great Locomotive Chase.
The Tunnel Hill Historical Foundation, in conjunction with the City of Tunnel Hill and Whitfield County have saved, and restored, the 1850 tunnel and now have it open to the public six days a week, along with a new heritage center and museum.
Also of interest to your group is the recent acquisition by the City of Tunnel Hill of the original 1852 Tunnel Hill Depot, which is currently being cleaned out in preparation for restoration.
